The Rothman-Ranawat Traveling Fellowship

Application process for the 2024 Rothman-Ranawat Fellowship is now open.  Travel will take place in November-December of 2024, will continue for 4-5 weeks throughout the United States and Canada, and will culminate at CCJR® 2024 in Orlando, FL.

Eligibility Criteria

A successful candidate MUST meet ALL of the following criteria.  Candidates may be from Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Europe, or Australia; selection will be made solely at the discretion of The Hip Society's Fellowship & Mentorship Committee.  All decisions are final.

  • Must be board-certified / board-eligible practicing orthopaedic surgeon in your country of residence/practice.
  • Must be at least five (5) years from completion of training in the specialty of hip surgery (having completed a fellowship in either adult reconstruction, sports medicine or hip joint preservation).
  • Must have exhibited interest in clinical or laboratory research and able to demonstrate documented interest in advancing hip surgery via publications, presentations, research.
  • Must be willing to individually or collectively complete projects determined by The Hip Society and present, either individually or collectively, at a subsequent national meeting.
  • Must be able to be away from home/practice on a 4-5-week tour in November-December 2024, and able to obtain an entry visa(s) for the United States and Canada. (The Hip Society will provide a letter of invitation upon request to selected Fellows. The Hip Society will not assist with the visa application process nor will reimburse any associated expenses. Please allow adequate time for visa processing.)

Health Information / Requirements

Proof of acceptable vaccination will be required for, including but not limited to, Hepatitis B, flu, MMR, varicella, Tdap.  Proof of a negative TB test and/or a full chest Xray also may be required.  All candidates must be willing and able to obtain the necessary documentation ahead of travel.

About the Rothman-Ranawat Traveling Fellowship

Named to honor the significant contributions, and to preserve the legacy, of Richard H. Rothman, MD, PhD and Chitranjan S. Ranawat, MD, The Hip Society’s Rothman-Ranawat Traveling Fellowship is open to four (4) young orthopaedic surgeons from North America (USA and Canada), and throughout the world.  Once selected, the traveling fellows visit up to ten (10) sites in North America as identified by the Fellowship & Mentorship Committee.  The host sites structure the fellows’ visits to include personal interactions, conferences, surgical observations, tours of research facilities, and cadaver labs.  The ultimate goal of the fellowship is to offer young surgeons an inspirational tour of state-of-the-art centers providing exemplary surgical care of the hip joint throughout North America.

This traveling fellowship is a biennial program.  Application process for the 2024 Fellowship will open in January of 2024.  Check back soon!

Travel begins in late August, and culminates at the BOA Annual Meeting in late September.  Fellows typically visit 6-7 centres in the United Kingdom.

The Hip Society is proud to partner with the British Hip Society to provide an exceptional exchange opportunity to two outstanding candidates from the United States and/or Canada.  Successful candidates will travel throughout the United Kingdom for a period of three-four weeks and will be hosted by world-renowned experts in adult hip reconstruction.  The program will include opportunities for scientific exchange, OR observations, close interaction with faculty, as well as social and cultural events. 

  • The program is open to board-certified or board-eligible practicing orthopaedic surgeons, permanently based in the United States or Canada.
  • Applicants must be hip fellowship-trained orthopaedists within one (1) to five (5) years of completing fellowship.
  • Applicants must be able to take 3-4 weeks away from home and practice in August-September.
  • Applicants must be committed to the practice of hip surgery.
  • Applicants must demonstrate documented interest in advancing hip surgery via publications, presentations, research.
  • Former HS-BHS Traveling Fellows are INELIGIBLE to reapply.
